I’ve travelled solo to different places worldwide, and after thinking carefully, I’ve picked my top 3 destinations for solo female travel. I know that safety and comfort can worry some people, as everyone’s experiences are different. But having personally visited these three places, I can confidently say that I loved every moment there, and they are perfect for solo travel for women. Today, I want to share these solo female travel destinations with you.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico

I’ve been to Playa del Carmen a few times, and I can’t wait to go back again. It’s located on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, on the beautiful Riviera Maya, along the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The city has a long history dating back to the ancient Maya civilization. It started as a small fishing village and has since grown into a popular destination for tourists from all over the world, while still keeping a certain charm.

Solo travel for women and Playa del Carmen are a perfect match:

⊕ Safety: Safety is always a big concern when traveling alone, but Playa del Carmen is considered quite safe for tourists, including solo female travellers. The city is lively and has lots of tourists, and the local authorities work to make sure visitors are safe.

⊕ Welcoming Atmosphere: Playa del Carmen has a friendly and welcoming vibe, which makes it easy for solo travellers to meet others. You’ll find lots of travellers – solo female travellers included – digital nomads, and expats here. There are plenty of events and places to socialize, like gyms, coffee shops, the beach, and nightclubs. Even if you’re shy, you’ll likely make friends easily.

⊕ English-Friendly: Many people in Playa del Carmen speak English, so it’s easy for international travellers to communicate and get around. It’s also a popular destination for Americans since it’s not far from the United States.

⊕ Stunning Beaches and Activities: Oh, the Caribbean beaches are amazing! Playa del Carmen has beautiful beaches with opportunities for snorkeling, water sports, and beach clubs. You’ll have lots of chances to meet fellow travellers while enjoying the sun and sea.

⊕ Easy to Reach: Getting to Playa del Carmen is convenient, as it’s well-connected. Just land in Cancun and take a bus to reach Playa del Carmen.

Koh Phangan, Thailand

In contrast to Playa del Carmen’s more modern and city-like feel, Koh Phangan is a tropical paradise in Thailand.

Situated in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Phangan is a picturesque island renowned for its natural beauty with pristine beaches, lush jungles, and crystal-clear waters.

Over time, Koh Phangan has become a sought-after destination for backpackers and travellers seeking a harmonious blend of adventure, relaxation, and spiritual experiences. The island gained fame for its legendary Full Moon Party, a beach celebration that draws thousands of revelers from all corners of the globe each month. Apart from the party scene, Koh Phangan also offers a serene escape with various wellness and yoga retreats.

Solo Travel For Women: Safety and Tips

Let me now share some helpful tips and practical advice to ensure a secure and enjoyable solo travel for women.

♦ Research Your Destination

Before you set off on your solo adventure, take some time to research your destination. Learn about the local customs, culture, and safety tips to stay informed and respectful during your trip. Understanding the dos and don’ts will help you blend in with the locals and have a more enjoyable experience. Also, try to learn a few basic phrases in the local language, like “hello” and “thank you.” This small effort can go a long way in building connections and showing respect to the locals you meet along the way.

♦ Stay Connected

Keep family and friends informed about your solo travel plans, itinerary, and accommodation details. Regularly update them about your whereabouts.

♦ Choose Safe Accommodation

Opt for reputable and well-reviewed accommodations in safe neighborhoods. Read reviews from other travelers to get an idea of their experiences. Avoid staying in sketchy areas, and if you accidentally find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, trust your instincts and just leave.

♦ Use Reliable Transportation

When getting around in your destination, opt for trustworthy transportation options. Use registered taxis or reputable rideshare apps, especially if you’re traveling at night.

♦ Dress Appropriately

Respect local customs and dress modestly when visiting conservative regions to avoid drawing unwanted attention. When in doubt, observe how locals dress and follow their lead.

♦ Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption

I know, a little party never killed nobody, but sip smartly on your solo journey. Avoid accepting drinks from strangers, and always keep an eye on your own.

♦ Avoid Dark and Isolated Areas

When exploring, stick to well-lit and bustling places, especially at night. Also, it’s best to avoid arriving at your next destination in the middle of the night.

♦ Trust Your Instincts

Honestly, this is my top tip! Your intuition is your superpower when you travel alone. Always listen to your gut feelings. If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, don’t hesitate to remove yourself from it.

♦ Keep Valuables Secure

Use a concealed money belt or anti-theft bag to keep your belongings safe. Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics.

♦ Know Emergency Numbers

Familiarize yourself with emergency contact numbers in the country you’re visiting, including local police and your country’s embassy or consulate.

♦ Stay Vigilant in Crowded Places

Remain alert and vigilant in crowded areas, as they can be potential spots for pickpocketing or petty theft.
